Ultimately your businesses success depends on how well your employees work together.

If you don't consciously pull them together with deliberate team building strategies, individuals will work towards their own agendas with their own rules. 

In worse case scenarios, they may even work against or undermine each other.

7 Strategies to Build a Team Culture in Your Business


There are a number of fairly simple things you can do as a business owner to get your employees working well together as a team:

  1. Align your team around a shared vision and goals

    This is definitely the most important starting point. Set some time aside for a full team meeting with the objective to work together to create a vision for the team and some goals.

    When individual team members are involved in creating and contributing towards the team's vision together it creates a sense of ownership and commitment. It becomes something they all believe in and want to achieve together.

    Make sure that quieter members of the team are also given the opportunity to contribute.

  2. Discuss and create some team rules

    Unless you specifically talk about how you will all work together and what you expect of each other, most people will make up their own rules.

    It really helps to openly clarify how you want to work together and what rules you all agree to abide by when dealing with each other.

    Some examples might include: No angry, rude or negative comments, speaking up if you can't complete a task or finding a replacement etc.

  3. Allocate roles according to each person's strengths

    Diversity is a great strength in teams - the more different skills, talents and temperaments you can access the better.

    It also makes it easier when you come to allocating roles because you have more chance of choosing someone for each job who has strengths in that area.

  4. Judge them on their results as a team

    If you've got the kind of business that rewards employees with performance incentives, you may need to consider whether your scheme promotes teamwork or not. 

    Sometimes businesses inadvertently encourage employees to compete with each other, rather than work together. Unfortunately you can't really have both so if you want your staff to pull together as a team, you should reward and celebrate their successes as a team.

  5. Settle new team members into the team quickly

    Whenever a new team member joins there is always a period of readjustment as new relationships are formed which can be disruptive to productivity.

    To keep the disruption to a minimum, make sure there is a proper induction process for the new team member and plan for some sort of social engagement so they can get to know everyone as quickly as possible.

    Camaraderie is very important for team spirit and this comes about much quicker when people know each other well.

  6. Give them the space to be self-directed

    Once your team has got it's goals, step back and let them take responsibility for keeping themselves on track. This really helps with motivation and makes them more accountable to each other. 

  7. Encourage open communication and feedback

    Probably one of the most important ingredients for an effective team is open and honest communication, especially when things are not going so well.

    A sign of a strong team is when the people within it feel comfortable giving their colleagues feedback when they're under-performing.
